Subject: New Student Cell Phone and Electronic Device Policy
Dear KUSD Families,
We want to inform you about an important new policy regarding student use of personal electronic devices, including cell phones, smart watches and wireless headphones across all schools in the district. This policy goes into effect on September 24, 2025, and follows the recent passage of Arizona House Bill 2484, which requires schools to limit student use of wireless communication devices during school day.
Why This Policy Is Being Introduced:
The goal is to create a more focused and supportive learning environment.
Policy Details:
Students must have all personal devices turned off or silenced and stored out of sight (such as in a backpack or locker). This includes phones, smartwatches, and wireless earbuds/headphones during instructional time.
Permitted Use:
• Students may use their devices during non-instructional time, before and after school, during lunch, and between classes (passing periods).
Communication Procedures:
If you need to urgently reach your student during school hours, please call the school office. Staff will ensure messages are promptly delivered. If a student needs to contact a parent or guardian during the school day, they must get permission from a staff member to do so through the school office.
Exceptions to the Policy:
Per the new state law, exceptions to this policy will be granted for the following reasons:
• Educational Use: A teacher may permit device use for a specific class activity that supports student learning.
• Medical Needs: Students with documented medical conditions will be accommodated as required.
• Emergencies: Device use may be allowed during school-wide emergencies.
Enforcement:
Students found in violation of this policy may face disciplinary actions; the incident will be handled according to the school’s student handbook. Repeated violations may result in the device being confiscated and returned only to a parent or guardian.
Please note: The school is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged devices.
We appreciate your support as Kayenta Unified School District works to provide a more focused and productive learning environment for all students. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to your school’s administration.
Sincerely,
Lemual Adson, Superintendent
