August 4, 2021

Kayenta Unified School District (KUSD) No. 27 will open schools with a focus on in-person learning. In-person learning is the most effective delivery of instruction and addresses the needs of the whole child. The first day of school is on August 9, 2021.

Distance learning from home is an option for students that choose that mode of learning. Distance learning for the 2021–2022 school year requires accountability for attendance and assignments. Parents must provide a home environment that supports learning and an adult that can be in the role of a learning coach. A distance learning contract describes the student and parent expectations to ensure successful learning delivery. In addition, the KUSD technology use agreement is necessary. Contact your school for additional information and specifics.

The district administrative team, the governing board, and employees relied on data through surveys from the family, community, and the teaching staff. In addition to the surveys, two public hearings were hosted by the school district and comments were collected from the hearing and the public comment email communication.

Kayenta Unified School District No. 27 is an Arizona public school. HB 2862 provided the legislative language for opening schools. KUSD met the mandates required to open the schools.

The school district has a safety protocol in place. The plan is governing board approved. The students, parents, and families have a crucial role in keeping our school safe. Please screen your student each day for symptoms. Do not send your student to school if they are ill. If one student in the house is ill, all the students will stay home. Remind your student to wear masks, sanitize hands, and maintain physical distancing. The behaviors will keep our schools safe and allow the schools to provide an effective learning environment.

Sincerely,

Lemual B. Adson
