I would like to extend a congratulations to Azalia Harvey-Leo (11th grade) and Alijah Belin (11th grade) for being nominated for September Co-Student of the Month. Both students have done an outstanding job thus far in the semester and have established great habits as student leaders within MVHS. Next, we would like to recognize Mr. Jon Sombrero and Mrs. Sharon Atene as our Staff of the Month for September. Mrs. Atene has done an exceptional job at providing great leadership skills within her respective department. She ensures that our building is clean and ready to go each day. In addition to the cleanliness of our building, she coordinates with her staff to ensure that our building is ready for any event we host. She does all of this with a smile on her face and a warm welcome each day. Mr. Sombrero has provided our AFJROTC students with extended opportunities outside of school to showcase their hard work in and around the Kayenta Community. The color guard has also been invited to a variety of community activities and Mr. Sombrero has played an integral part in supporting our students off campus. Recently, he accompanied our students to the Western Agency fair where they helped coordinate traffic during the festivities on Saturday. In addition, Mr. Sombrero has provided a myriad of resources to our senior parents as the senior class sponsor. On behalf of my office staff, thank you Azalia, Alijah, Mr. Sombrero and Mrs. Atene for your hard work here at MVHS. Respectfully, Ryan Dodson, M. Ed. Principal, Monument Valley High School

On Saturday, Sept. 17th, 2022, a group of six members of the MVHS Outdoor Challenge Club headed up to Natural Bridges National Monument for a hike through a spectacular section of White Canyon. The excitement started with an ascent of the infamous “Moki Dugway” which switchbacks its way 1000 vertical feet from the Valley of the Gods to the top of Cedar Mesa. This road is enough to strike terror into the heart of the average tourist, but not so the trusty KUSD bus drivers! Our hike began with a descent of 500 feet in less than a mile. That puts you at the base of the Sipapu Bridge, the second largest natural bridge in the world, after Rainbow Bridge. The canyon had seen some recent flash floods so there was a lot of mud and even some running water. After about 2.5 miles in the canyon you come to Katchina Bridge. We stopped here for lunch. Now it was time for the climb back out of the canyon, another 500 vertical feet in less than a mile. We had the advantage of a bus driver who met us with the bus at the Katchina Bridge overlook. If you are on your own, it is a mile hike from here back to where we started at the Sipapu trailhead. By mid-October this hike will be even more spectacular as the cottonwoods and aspens start changing color. Good job to the participants. and a big thanks to our bus driver! Richard R. Ludwig M.Ed.
