Superintendent's Message

As the Homecoming festivities come to an end and the schools approach the end of the first quarter, I’d like to take some time to share a few items.

Fall intercession is October 9 to 13. This is a great time to relax, catch up on chores and to take care of yourself. In addition to fall intercession the elementary school and the middle school will provide Reteach for a limited number of students. Students will be invited to participate in Reteach October 10-12. Transportation and meals are provided. Reteach is a very focused session on supporting students to attain skills that may have been missed during the first quarter. Contact the elementary school or middle school for additional information about Reteach.

KUSD strives to provide a safe and nurturing environment for the students. A student panel is scheduled for October 17. The purpose of the panel is to provide an opportunity for school district administrators, directors, coordinators, and supervisors to hear directly from students regarding school safety and the relationship between students and employees. Hearing directly from the students as they respond to the questions will allow the leaders to adjust as necessary. There is a direct correlation between enhanced school safety and a supportive and positive relationship with employees and adults.

October 23 to 31, 2023, is Red Ribbon week. Schools have activities scheduled to support students. The Red Ribbon program aligns well with the schools focus on being brave and to “see something, say something”. Visit https://www.redribbon.org/ or contact the schools for additional information.

All students need support from everyone to develop skills to thrive as a student and for their future. Educator and author Dr. Michele Borba lists seven skills students need to thrive. The skills are self-confidence, empathy, self-control, integrity, curiosity, perseverance, and optimism. The use of worksheets to teach these skills is not effective. What is effective is to see the skills modeled and to see examples in everyday situations and interactions. Your help in developing the skills with your student will greatly assist the school, your family, the community, and the nation. Thank you for your support.

Again, thank you for trusting the school district to facilitate learning for your students.
