Dear Parents:
After school on Wednesday, March 9, the District received reports that a student brought a gun to the Kayenta Middle School campus. The District took immediate measures to ensure that the student would not be allowed on campus and is continuing to work with law enforcement to ensure the situation is appropriately handled. The student involved will be subject to appropriate disciplinary action pursuant to the Governing Board policies and laws that govern weapons on school grounds.

Fortunately, no one was harmed in this case and the gun was not discharged. Nevertheless, I would like to take this opportunity to remind all of our parents and students that we have a plan in place at each of our schools to handle emergency situations when they arise. This plan is reviewed annually in conjunction with law enforcement and other emergency responders. Please discuss this incident with your children and inform them that it is against the law to bring weapons of any kind to any school campus. Also, please remind students that they should inform a staff member any time they see or hear of a weapon on campus.

Our District is committed to the safety and education of all our students and is dedicated to clearly communicating with parents about safety issues when they arise. Please contact Christopher Claw, District Safety Officer, at 928.697.2028, Christopher.claw@kayenta.k12.az.us or contact the school principal to discuss any concerns or questions you may have with regard to this issue.

The District will make school counselors available to any students who feel the need to discuss this topic with a counselor.

Thank you,
Lemual Adson, Superintendent
